Hainan Visa for Russian Citizens: Visa-Free Entry, E-Visa Steps and Documents

Hainan is one of the easiest parts of China for Russian travelers: the island welcomes guests all year, and for a short holiday you usually need no visa at all. Below is how it works in practice, which documents to prepare, and how to apply for an e-visa if you plan to stay longer or travel further into China.

Important: entry rules are updated from time to time. Before booking, always check the website of the Chinese consulate and the official e-visa portal. What follows is practical guidance, not a substitute for official confirmation.

Two ways to enter the island

Russian citizens have two options. The first is Hainan's visa-free entry: the island is part of the 59-country scheme, allowing a stay of up to 30 days in the province without a visa. The second is a Chinese e-visa, required if you want to visit other provinces, stay beyond the visa-free period, or enter China through another gateway.

The provincial visa-free scheme

The key condition is that the trip stays within Hainan. Entry is normally made through Haikou Meilan or Sanya Phoenix airports, and through some seaports. At the border, officers usually ask for your passport, return or onward tickets, accommodation confirmation and a rough itinerary. Your passport should be valid for at least six months and have blank pages.

Main restriction: the visa-free regime applies only inside Hainan province. If you want to visit Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing or Shanghai, you need a visa; otherwise you will face questions on departure and have to change your route. You also cannot leave the island by ferry into the mainland under this scheme.

Documents to have ready at the border

• A Russian passport valid for at least 6 months, with two blank pages.
• Return tickets, or an onward ticket to a third country, dated within the permitted stay.
• Hotel, guesthouse or apartment booking, printed or shown in the app.
• A short itinerary: cities, dates, accommodation and return flight.
• Your accommodation address in Latin script and Chinese; airport staff may ask you to write it down.

The e-visa: when and how to apply

Apply in advance if you plan to stay more than 30 days, need to travel to other provinces, or have a multi-country Asian itinerary. The tourist (L) visa is requested through the official e-visa portal, whose link is published by the consular section of the Chinese embassy; visa centers in Moscow and other cities also accept applications in person.

Steps

1. Choose the visa type: tourist (L) for holidays, commercial for business trips.
2. Complete the application on the portal: passport details, address, employment, planned dates and places of stay.
3. Upload a digital photo (light background, full face, no headwear) and a scan of your passport's first page.
4. Attach your hotel booking, return tickets and, if available, an invitation letter.
5. Pay the visa fee and keep the application number for tracking.
6. Once approved, download the visa, check every letter and date, and print two copies.

If you apply through a visa center, you also submit a paper form, a photo in the required format, and fingerprints where required by your age and travel history. Processing usually takes from a few working days to two weeks, so apply early in high season.

Common mistakes

• Buying a ticket to Guangzhou assuming the visa-free rule covers all of China; it covers Hainan only.
• Listing hotel A on the booking while staying at guesthouse B: the address is checked, so keep the confirmation for your actual stay.
• A return ticket dated beyond 30 days, which disqualifies you from visa-free entry.
• A passport with only four months left: even with a visa you may be refused, so renew it in advance.

What to do right after arrival

Within 24 hours of checking in, foreigners must complete residence registration: hotels do it automatically, while in private apartments you do it together with the landlord. The detailed procedure is covered in our separate guide on accommodation registration in Hainan. Two practical tasks are also worth handling immediately: currency exchange and a local SIM card, each covered in its own tutorial.

Summary

For a short island holiday, most Russian travelers only need Hainan's visa-free entry: passport, return tickets, a booking, and the address at hand. An e-visa is for longer stays or trips into mainland China. Stay within the province and keep your documents accessible, and arrival is straightforward.
